Caught in a Trap: Working with Clients in Actively Abusive Relationships (Session U)
(Repeat Session E)
Working with clients who are actively experiencing abuse can feel like a very ‘black and white’ situation: as helping professionals we feel an urgency to convince them to leave immediately, and it can be easy to see this as the ‘only’ goal. Clients who choose to stay or are not quite ready to leave can trigger feelings of frustration and helplessness in us as we try to assist. This workshop will use case examples of psychotherapy with clients experiencing abuse from their romantic partners to develop a framework for harm reduction, reducing shame, working with counter- transference and moving towards sustainable change.
