Keynote Address- Lundy Bancroft “ Why The Domestic Violence Movement is Losing Ground”

After nearly three decades of progress across Canada and the U.S. in combatting domestic violence, the past fifteen years have seen gains slipping away. Multiple urgent issues are failing to be adequately addressed, including: 1) The growing economic desperation in which abused women typically find themselves, making their options for escape increasingly limited compared to 20 years ago; 2) The mounting domination of custody court processes by theories and approaches that trivialize domestic violence and child abuse, and that elevate the extensive involvement of both parents at all costs; 3) The over-professionalization of the domestic violence movement, with a resultant loss of grassroots energy, including the rampant failure to put survivors at the head of the movement. Lundy Bancroft will analyze each of these three points of crisis and describe the solutions that we must urgently undertake.
