WORKING WITH FAITH COMMUNITIES (SESSION A)

Victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence who embrace various faiths, religious and spiritual beliefs and practices will frequently turn first to their spiritual leaders when seeking support. Often however, these leaders are ill-prepared to address the many complexities associated with domestic and sexual violence. As a result, female victims and survivors do not receive the help needed from their communities of faith. This 90 minute concurrent session will focus on the following:
1. Identifying the religious and spiritual tactics perpetrators use to justify domestic and spiritual violence
2. Articulating traditional responses offered by faith community members to situations of sexual and domestic violence occurring in their midst
3. Establishing and maintaining healthy and safe boundaries when addressing situations of sexual and domestic violence with members of faith communities
4. Employing strategies to effectively involve more religious and spiritual leaders in the care of victims/survivors and the accountability of perpetrators
