VICARIOUS TRAUMA AND ITS IMPACT ON HELPING PROFESSIONALS AND THE ONES THEY LOVE (SESSION C)

IPV professionals are often at risk of being traumatized by hearing the traumatic experiences of those they are trying to help. This presentation will briefly define vicarious trauma, causation and symptoms, as well as explore how IPV professionals’ personal relationships can be affected by the experience – often creating distance, conflict and disconnection. Sharon will also explore how the family systems theories may be applied to understanding how and why our families are susceptible to experiencing the reverberating impacts of vicarious trauma. She will then share strategies for preventing vicarious trauma from impacting relationships with family and friends.
