As an early proponent of Men’s Sheds, Punch Jackson noticed that many features that made them successful elsewhere exist in Edmonton. Punch noticed that in Edmonton an ageing population, loosely integrated communities, large geographic distances, and traditional male socialization, etc. contributed to social isolation and concomitant mental health problems, like depression and loneliness, among men.
In his previous career, Punch was the Executive Director of Public Library Services in Alberta Municipal Affairs. Over his career his accomplishments include connecting libraries in Alberta to the Internet and inspiring service providers and the voluntary sector to work together to build stronger and better communities through recreational activities.
